Cancun - Tulum Mayan Ruins

We took an excursion about an hour south to Tulum, which has ruins of a 12th century AD Mayan town, including a temple.  The Tulum ruins are literally right at the water's edge.  Our tour guide was very knowledgeable about the Mayan civilization, and talked about their culture from around 3000 BC until now.  The Mayans now represent about 20% of the population in these areas, and there are about 27 Mayan dialects.  Mayans are known to be great linguists, as their language predisposes them to learn other languages very quickly.  So it is not uncommon for Mayans to speak their native tongue, Spanish, English, and other European languages, especially french.

Yep Tulum is awesome.   You should have asked for the tour guide whose name is Moroni!  He has a lot of in-depth LDS info.  Really cool.  Funny story - Dave asked him "So have you been a member all your life?"  and he replied, "My name is Moroni, what do you think?"  hahah Dave hadn't paid attention to his name obviously.

And yes coming over the hill and seeing access to the water is so relieving after sweating through that tour.

This was a really fun beach for body surfing.  I thought Tulum was very interesting.  You got some great shots.

Yeah, Juan Ramone gave us the non-mormon version of the tour...  hahah!  He was a very humble but knowledgeable guy, and his daughter was a cute addition to the tour.  But we went one better than Moroni, because on our snorkeling tour, our guide was Jesus!!!

So is this a Book of Mormon site, Jodi?  This is really cool.  I remember on my cruise we could take a day trip to one of these ruins but I chose not to.

I watched a special on the Mayans a few weeks ago.  Some guy that studies Mayan history discovered a monument way out on some very remote island in the Pacific.  On top of this monument was the only place you could see like 3 very significant celestial events that are all supposed to happen simultaneously in 2012.  Mayans understanding of the movement of the stars and planets was amazing.  Just getting to this island, and then getting to the monument were quite difficult for the guy and his guide.  Imagine being the Mayans and trying to build this thing in the middle of nowhere.
