Cancun - Playa del Carmen

This is a little bigger town than the one we were near at our resort.  So we took a 1/2 day trip down there to see the reknowned 5th street shopping district, which is a street blocked off to only pedestrian traffic, and is about 40 blocks long.  It is very quaint, and very clean.  There are frequent placques that depict and explain about the numerous Mayan gods and goddesses.  5th street parallels the waterfront, and D and I walked down and got wet while the die hard shoppers did their best to empty their wallets!  We noticed that all the areas that we visited along the Riviera Maya, or Mexican Caribean coast, were very clean and better cared for than the Mexico that we remember from our other trips.  There are waste containers, including recycle containers, everywhere and there is a pretty strong focus on keeping trash controlled.

Did you do any fishing?  What do they charge to take you out?

No, we didn't fish, and we didn't go out in any of the boats.  They are frequently asking if you want to go out fishing or diving, but we always ignored them, so I never found out how much they would charge.  In Puerto Morelos, you could take one of those little powered skiffs out to one of two larger catamarans and dive from the cat.  The reef varies in distance from the shore, from maybe 100 yards to maybe 1/4 mile.  The reef runs from just off the shore of Cancun, all the way south along most of the Riviera Maya, probably 100 miles.  It is the world's 2nd longest reef, 2nd only to the great barrier reef off Australia.  Everybody we talked to said the diving / snorkeling along this reef is the best in the world.  In this part of Mexico, they have gotten hyper environmental, and there are cans for trash, recycle, and organic everywhere we went.  They also check your sun screen to make sure that it is bio degradeable before they let us out of the van.  The guide reminded us a lot not to pee in the caves or cenotes either.  They provide pretty good out houses at each area.

Wow, interesting how they keep everything so clean. Bio degradeable sunscreen, sheesh. Dave went scuba diving when we were at Cozumel, but I was sick and throwing up in the hotel room so I didn't get to see this amazing location.
