Why the name TurtleFox?

Submitted by Jay on Thu, 01/25/2007 at 2:56pm.

People are bound to ask me, and already have, "Why TurtleFox?" So I thought I'd write a brief history of where the name came from.

As with any new venture or project, the first thing you try and do is come up with a name for it, so you can at least call it something without saying "that thing". However, it sux to come up with a name and then find out the domain name is unavailable, so we thought we'd kill two birds with one stone, come up with a name, and also one that was available in the domain world.

Here were some of the early candidates:

  • bigredwagon.com
  • bigbluegoose.com
  • familystump.com
  • mybinds.com
  • peoplebinds.com

Needless to say, we really didn't like any of those, but we needed a name, and just coming up with that list drove us all to headaches at 3am in the morning. Finally the next day, Geoff was working on some comps to get started using mybinds, but we didn't like that cause it bites on myspace obviously. So I said, just for the time being, just use the most random set of connected words you can think of, so we at least can call it something, whatever, I don't care, TurtleFox if you have to. Our slogan can be, "Keep in touch at your pace."

After 2-3 months of development, nobody had come up with anything better, and the name started to stick, and people started saying they liked it. So, launch day came, and we still didn't have a better name, so that's what it is, TurtleFox. What does it mean? I have no idea, but it meets a few important criteria:

  • It's easy to say
  • It's easy to remember (i think)
  • You can't mispell it, and if you do, your IQ isn't high enough to use the site.
  • It is so random that it doesn't really have any hidden meanings.

And that's where the name TurtleFox came from.

And to add to this, i'd like to paint the picture of how difficult it is to name an online company these days.  My guess as to how many hours were spent, over the 2-3 years of concept development, is probably close to 100 hours.  The night before we settled on TurtleFox, Jay and I were up extremely late, brainstorming the weirdest names imaginable, only to find the domain name wasnt available.  It was so irritating, I developed a major headache, out of sheer frustration.  The intensity of the search became dangerously critical, when I sprung a leak and started bleeding from my nose.  At that point, I said forget this crap, and went to bed.

That was only the 2nd nosebleed I have ever had in my life, that I can recall.  The first one was when i was about 13 years old, playing shortstop on a horrible field, and my dad hit a screaming ground ball to me in practice.  The ball popped up at the last second, and nailed me in the face.  The only thing I caught was the blood in my glove.

Contrary to the norm, I have actually derived a meaning for the web site name, TurtleFox.  Typically a business will derive a company name from a meaning, or service they provide.  We went the other way... finding a name, and then forcing a meaning out of it.  So here is what I am telling you it means.

Many of our families have members that are vastly different in their online abilities.  Some of them are "turtles", in that they are slow to know.  They have a hard time posting photos, or even logging in for that matter.  But are still very interested in keeping in touch.  Many families also contain "foxes", or people that take technology and run with it.  People like this, example my younger sister, can overheat a keyboard and wear out a good set of speakers with all the message "dinging", when chatting back and forth.

This site allows for families and friends, regardless of your technological know-how, to KEEP IN TOUCH.  Everyone can KEEP IN TOUCH at their OWN PACE.  Turtles and Foxes.

We pretty much built this site from scratch, 3 people combined. In terms of features, it is similar to Facebook in many ways, but the idea was to take more of a family-angle, and try and make the site as simple and easy to use, focus much more keeping in touch as the theme, and much less on social networking and meeting new people like facebook and other sites.

So can I point out that the phrase above should read "You can't mispell it, and if you do, *your* IQ isn't high enough to use the site."?  Just thought it was funny in the context of the sentence. ;-)

Jay, your English may be bad, but how many other guys with your complexion speak Vietnamese?  (And BTW, is there a spell-check function in this application?)

yeah, there is a spell checker, but it's a bit of a pain to install. If you click the little "down arrow" above the input box where you type your comment, you'll see a bunch of options to bold, italics, format your text, etc, and one of those options is a little spell check button. When you click it, you'll get a popup saying you need to download and install something. If you can manage to figure out how to download and install that application, then the speller checker will work (and its actually pretty nice).  GOOD LUCK!

Oh, when I took vietnamese at BYU, it was amazing to see 20 totally pale white guys speaking totally fluent vietnamese. All ex-missionaries of course.

I've never been able to get the spell check to work on my PC.  But then again not much on TF works on my PC.  That's why I am the #1 beta tester.

I have read how the blog name was started - over two years ago.  I am so far behind no one will ever read this.  That's good - don't want to hear of any more nose bleeds!
