Who taught you to drive?

Submitted by scott on Thu, 03/06/2008 at 3:45pm.

Uncle Brandt.  My co-worker was telling me she learned to drive when she was 12, in Turner, OR on an agricultural lot.  That reminded me of Brandt commanding me to scoot over one day, to the drivers seat of a yellow Chevy Luv.  So I told her about Uncle Brandt teaching me to drive a manual transmission on the gravel road in Hillsboro, OR, when I was 12 years old.  Later, when I was 15, Jim Hill let me beat up on his little Red Hyundai and drive it around.

My dad started the teaching process, but definitely Troy was the primary teacher.  He had much more patience and was less anxious than my dad.  Soon he gets to teach Alyssa!

There was a gravel road across the street from our house and my parents would let us drive a manual transmission car down that road when we were probably 13-14, by ourself!!

I learned how to drive on a 1955 Chevy Station Wagon. It was a stick shift, and my Mom had trouble driving it. It used to jam up between first and second gear. My Dad taught me how to get out of the car when this would happen, pop the hood, and align the linkage pins together so that it would pop back into neutral.  . Alot of times this would happen at intersections, so I got really good at Chinese fire drills. He taught me how to drive it, and I thought it was so fun. I was only 9 years old.

Brad's experience reminded me of the Brown Plymouth sta. wg. we had.  That thing hated me.  All of a sudden  the butterfly thing on the carburator would stick closed.  Of course it would always happen when it was pouring rain or hotter than a fire cracker.  Brandt and Troy weren't old enough or actually tall enough to reach into the motor.  I carried a needle nosed plyers under the front seat.  When it would stall and just not start, I would get out, take the air thing off the top of the carburator use the plyers to hold the butterfly open, climb back it the car, get it started and then put the thing back together.  I hated that car and it hated me.  Thanks Shelley for getting rid it for me. That was when we got our first Volvo.

Tim "taught" me how to drive when I was about 12 or 13 in Green Canyon Idaho. I was scared out of my wits and driving about 2 miles an hour. Tim reached his foot over to the accelerator and floored it. Tons of fun.

I don't have any interesting stories. Both my parents taught me to drive, plus the Driver's Ed course at school. Pretty boring, really.

My first driving lesson what QUITE an experience.  I was probably 15 with no learner's permit and was with Bob Schlag in his 1957 Chevy.  We happened to be in the hilly neighborhood off of Hilltop Drive.  I begged him to let me try to drive.  It was dark and cold outside so the windows were all steamed up so you couldn't see out the rear window.  I climbed into the driver's seat and the bumpy ride of a unskilled stick shift driver began.   A car pulled up behind us at a stop sign so I gave it the 'ol college try with one foot on the gas and one on the clutch.  BUMP, BUMP, BUMP and then the red flashing lights appeared in the rear window.  To make a long story short I had to go to court with my parents and Bob was also ordered to appear.  The judge gave us both a stern lecture on our criminal activity.

Geoff, Clark may have "taught you to drive" but I put you behind the wheel long before you were legal, same as Scott, and pretty sure I did that with Sean also.

I drove the tractor and trucks in the hayfields so young, that I don't remember anyone teaching me to drive.  But the first thing I drove regularly was the old pale yellow Chevy pickup with the three-on-the-tree transmission, and no synchronization into second gear.  Couldn't even double clutch that thing and stop the grinding.

When I was 14 or 15 my mom would let me drive up the driveway until one time I pushed the gas instead of the break and put the front corner of the minivan into the side of the old motor home.  I think Petra started to run out into the driveway and - when you haven't driven much - it's pretty easy to mix up those darn peddles.

I remember that, Chris. I think it was me that hit the side of the garage door, though. Well, the post between the garage doors. You're just going backwards and trying to turn, no big deal right? Didn't realize that in reverse, unlike going forward, the nose moves differently.

Scott you're the first one that MADE me drive.  The Nissan Sentra parked between the Macks house and our house in San Jose.  You made me do the stick shift and all from the drivers seat and my brain just didn't get it.  I was only 13 I think.  I made it almost out to Berryessa then I freaked because that was a major street and I said I was done.  Scared to do it again until I was at least 16.  Don't remember the second time.

She caught on almost immediately and hardly stalled the car at all. The clutch was no problem for her.

Lets not forget the fact that Spongin drove all the way from Vegas to Orange County at age 14!  Her driving buddy got tired so he asked her to drive.

Brad, you stay out of my TF.  I did not write Kevin Hurley.  Kevin is the son of my good friends the Hurleys that used to live in our ward.  Kevin was driving home from Provo and I think Alesha was riding with him when school was over for her at Timpview High in Provo.  I had already moved here a couple of weeks before she got out so she stayed with a friend in Provo.  He got really sleepy so he ask Alesha if she would drive.  What a dork.

Awwwww. Brady.  You can get involved with others--just do it in your own TF.
