Wow, that is truly incredible.  I'm too ignorant to guess whether this is really a big break-through or not, but sure seems like it to me.

Also glad to see you getting this off Photobucket -- Alex and Darren (the founders of Photobucket, who just sold it to MySapce) are clients of my team.

Very cool. Watching things like this make me feel alternately not very smart and not very productive!

That is really something.

I would love to see that make it to production, and see what affect on the world it would have.  It's amazing how many world issues would come to a screechin hault, if our interest and reliance on oil came to a screeching hault.

It is very likely though, that this technology will be bought by some rich oil guy, and buried.  Yah?

Well, I did some more looking into it and found an article on wikipedia about it.  According to wikipedia the amount of energy used by the radio generator is higher than the amount of energy produced by the salt water.  It's probably not going to be anything to get too excited about in the near future.  Still, a good discovery.

but, as consumers, we would have to buy (or recharge) batteries and salt water, rather than gasoline.  I still think that could be productive.

That is cool. However, the fuel really isn't the salt water. (In the process, the water absorbs energy which causes it to be converted into Hydrogen + Oxygen. Then the H2 and O2 are converted back into water) The only thing sustaining this cycle is the energy put into it by the radio waves (like Sean said).

Having said that, I bet there could be some really creative applications of this. But most likely someone will want to use it as a weapon--can you imagine lighting the ocean on fire?

Come to think of it--isn't there a legend that some ancient greek guy had a ray gun that destroyed ships? Maybe Archimedes knew about this way to burn salt water...

Just to add to my last post:

Most historians believe Archimedes burned ships by focusing sunlight with large mirrors. But maybe he was using radiowaves...

We must remember we have a doctor in the family now.  Interesting comment, Ben.  Science was my best subject in school so it is fun to hear the latest on how things really work.

Gosh Sean, you get me all excited with the news reel, and then chop it with the facts from Wikipedia.

As Thomas Doby would say... SCIENCE!

This is still pretty cool.  True, probably not for now, but eventually.  Who's to say we can't perfect the radio wave generator to utilize less power and provide the same output.  Cell phones certainly had poor range once, but the power of their waves have been increased while the size has dramatically decreased.
