Today's Weather

Submitted by geoff on Sun, 04/20/2008 at 8:20pm.

wow - what a day.

When we woke up, I thought maybe our church was going to be cancelled.  It was snowing hard, and the ground was white.   But we headed out, and the roads weren't too bad.  Three hours later, I walked out of church, and it was sunny, fairly warm, and not a single flake of snow anywhere to be seen.   Couple hours after church, I headed out for a walk, and got hailed on.   I really wish I had taken pictures, of the three different "days" within a day.  It was pretty amazing.

We've had a couple days of very clear, but weirdly cold weather.  sunny, bright, but only 50 degrees, then the wind starts blowing and it feels really cold.  Yesterday, me, Eric and Talyn teed off over at Moraga CC at about 6 pm (after all the "real" golfers are done).  Eric insisted on shorts with his short-sleeved collared shirt.  I had better sense, and although in shorts, had a long sleeve shirt.  Talyn decided on long pants and a hooded sweatshirt to go over his golf shirt -- he was the only smart one!!  By the time we finished 5 holes (okay, you cannot play fast with an 8 year old and a giant guy who shoots an average of about 8 on each hole . . .) we were freezing.  Still fun, but next time out, we'll hope for better golf weather.

It will be a few years before anyone in my immediate family can beat me at golf.  Even the extended family, I can hold my own -- except against Tyler and Dave.  They're both players.

Again, I have to disagree with Valorie -- NSBS's count more, as they're part of the family by choice.  Plus I'm a fan of both Tyler and Dave . . . Of course, hope to see more of both them to really decide!

Is Ryan a golfer? Can he ever beat Fred? I know Fred is pretty solid, or at least appeared so last time he took me and Sean out on the course. At least he was patient while I dribbled my way to the hole.

Last night I couldn't sleep because it was pretty hot.  I looked at the thermostat and it said it was 80 degrees in the house.  I went outside and it was 82 and sticky hot.  That was at 9 pm.  The weather here is really different than what I am used to.

it's 83 degrees and sunny, no clouds in the sky and bone dry - only like 8% humidity!! We keep the water flowin' and the hand cream handy during our dry seasons.

The last house where I lived before I got married had no A/C.  Not usually a problem around here, but there would always be a week or so each summer that would get really hot.  My bedroom was on the 2nd floor with not much airflow, so one week it was averaging 95 degrees in my bedroom at 10pm.  Glad we have A/C in our new apartment.  Sorry Elizabeth.  And this is only the beginning of the summer :(

No, Elizabeth is in Texas. I think Laura was just commiserating since she knows how it feels. My hot story is when I was pregnant with Michael, we had a really hot spell (over 100) and our house had no A/C. I became a workaholic those weeks :-) Okay, not really, but I stayed at the nice air-conditioned office pretty late a few times.

Brandt, I ask Mary why Fred never responded and I could not believe her answer.  She didn't know she was suppose to check the tracking box.  So all these months she has been on TF she has not been in the loop of any of the comments.  She only looks when she gets an email notifying her that someone put something on TF.  So now that I found where this comment was I can let her know.

I suggested to the great and powerful TF owners and operators that they make the tracking box checked by default. I know I've forgotten before, too. I don't know if it would annoy anyone to have to uncheck, but it seems most people check most blogs/albums they visit.

well i cant remember where i had posted about kylie's softball game being near 30 degrees outside.  Well she has a softball game today, and it will be 92.   Hows that for a single season record?   One game played at 30 degrees, and another game played at 92 degrees.   62 degree difference.  hah.

It is weird - we had that record-setting weekend in May, when it hit like 96, but other than that it's been cold pretty much all spring. It's like the weather used up all its heat in one burst and didn't have any left for the rest of the days :-)

Oregon has had crazy weather this year.  It's been like spring here the past week or two - high 40s and 50s.  Rain sometimes, but not snow.  Of course it will probably get cold again and keep snowing through May.

I guess it was Salem's turn after they got off with less than Portland had in December. We also had a little bit on the lawn/trees but the roads were clear this morning. Cami, poor Ansel, croup is no fun!

yeah, poor kid. They kept telling us that they thought that it was croup.  We were at the ER for 6 hours and finally I went up and asked how soon he would be seen and they said in another 4 or 5 hours (this was at 3am when I asked) so I laughed and said to just schedule an appointment for him at the doctors then!  They did and we went home and got a few hours shut eye before turning back around and going to the doctors.  It turns out that Ansel has pneumonia, asthma, and a croup cough.  They did x-rays at the doctors today, and his lungs are SO full, they looked white all the way through.  He can't breathe very easily, and if he even walks across the room he is winded, poor kid.  His O2 saturation is pretty low.  Kind of scary.   He has no fever though, pretty weird.  It makes me think that maybe it is a viral pneumonia instead of bacterial and our prescription for antibiotics will do no good! The doctor gave me all these medical/medication release forms to give to his school.-- or preschool as his case may be, I guess that once he is feeling better he still has to take his inhaler very regularly to ensure he heals completely.  That one was a first for me.  I have asthma, Levi has asthma, and now Ansel, this is a first for requiring a dose at school.

You sat there for 6 hours and THEN they told you it was going to be 4 or 5 hours more?  Don't tell me this is Kaiser.  When I had kaiser I never waited like that.  Robie doesn't wait like that.  And with a child that has a breathing problem.

Yeah, it was REALLY crazy.  It was totally unusual for Kaiser.  Did you forget that Joe works for Kaiser?  We LOVE Kaiser.  I wasn't actually complaining about the service, they can only do so much.  They kept apologizing, and telling me that if he gets any worse then they would rush him back.  Well, he wasn't getting worse, and I couldn't feel good about myself saying he was, when he wasn't.  So I just waited, and cringed at his constant hacking.  At one point he coughed so hard he gave himself a bloody nose! I had brought a movie player, several dvds, Ansel's big soft blanket, water and snacks.  He was fine and never complained, in fact, he slept the last 2 1/2 hours. (that was when I thought, okay this kid can go home and wait for an appointment, if he is sleeping okay now.)  But the unusual wait wasn't just Kaiser.  There has been a really bad flu epidemic in the Portland area and ALL of the hospital beds are full in all of the area hospitals.  They had to start putting them in ER beds, and Sunnyside hospital was taking no more ambulances that night.  So that leaves a very narrow flow of ER patients, in and out, thus our enormous wait.  So now, I feel a little sleep deprived.  A random observation, while I waited.  There were A LOT of hispanic families just hanging out in the ER in the middle of the night.  None of them looked or acted sick.  Is this usual?  Why would you bring the whole family, in the middle of the night? (mom, dad, kids)  The kids were running around, unfazed, like this was the usual way things rolled, not tired at all.  There were 6 full hispanic families there, while I was there.  I just wondered if this was a cultural thing, I mean is going to the doctor was a family affair of something?  Anybody observed this as well?  Just wondering the reasoning behind this phenomena.

Yup, I remembered Joe works for Kaiser-- that is how I knew where you must have been.  That is another broken part of our health care is that those who have no insurance can go into the ER and be treated for anything.  I would LOVE to know how the octuplet mom got to go to Kaiser.  Cami, is there any way Joe could find out for me how in the world a woman who has no job or health insurance gets to go to Kaiser.  We were paying $1000/month COBRA when Brad lost his job and because Ceridian who managed the COBRA could never make Kaiser understand we were covered we were denied access to Kaiser for at least 2 months WHILE we were paying the $2000.  And with Kaiser it is not like we could use the facility while they were haggling and then get reimbursed--we were just out the benefits.  Hope Ansel is doing better.

Valorie, you just explained it yourself!  Anyone can go to a hospital and get treated!  That includes illegal immigrants and crazy people like octomom (Incidentally, her doctor wasn't a Kaiser doctor, she just showed up there to deliver).  Even Kaiser has to accept non-kaiser and uninsured L&D patients, same as everyone else.  No one can turn away a laboring mom.  Insured or capable of being insured is another issue.  You and Brad had the unfortunate circumstance of being employable and making money.  The circumstance you had with a COBRA isn't just a Kaiser phenom.  That is across the board health care troubles.  Ceridian?  They are the company that manages a lot of Kaiser's finances.  How is it they were trying to get on board for you?  Sounds like a collision of interests.  Are you sure they were trying that hard?  They were probably talking out the otherside of their mouth. ;-)  How frustrating, Valorie!  Did you ever get reimbursed?  I hate going through the red tape of middlemen.
Right now, my sister Brindi, in Georgia, is having trouble getting insured by anyone.  She is on a cobra plan for now, but no one will accept her until she has surgery on her slight disk bulge.  Now, how is she supposed to get that done, while uninsured?  AND her doctor was the one that told her that it was too minor to operate on.  So, right now she is considered uninsurable.  Also, her 3 month old had reflux, so he can't be insured until he is 2 years old!!  Ridiculous.  Her husband is self-employed, so no umbrella group plan.  I feel so bad for her.

No, I am not sure they were trying to get on board for us--they just kept saying it wasn't their fault it was Kaisers and Kaiser kept saying it wasn't their fault it was Ceridians.  It wasn't until we threatened a full blown law suit that someone finally did something.  No, we never got reimbursed.  When our 3 months of COBRA was over we moved on.  We got 1 month for the price of 3.  Back to octo.  I understand ER has to accept everyone but this was a pregnancy that existed for months.  She didn't just walk in there one night and say I am in labor.  They had teams training for months in prep of the moment.   She had to have had regular check-ups.  Now Kaiser turns the entire bill over to Medical so we get to pay for it.  Hope Obama helps your sister.  Really sad.

Octomom got pregnant outside of Kaiser, at a private fertility clinic, and that doctor was NOT a Kaiser doctor. I am not sure how much of the care, for her, he provided.  I don't know all the details, but Joe told me that she was on Medicare, and Kaiser accepts that coverage, so she could have had prenatal care through that.  But, Kaiser doesn't incur those costs or pass them on to their customers, they pass them on to the government, who pays for medicare.  So....If you don't want to pay for that, take it up with the government, since they are the ones providing medicare, through  your tax payments. ;-) BTW, It doesn't matter that people knew about a pregnancy or how long a preexisting condition it is, sometimes a woman can't make it to her preferred hospital and all L&D are required to accept them. This may or may not be the case of octomom, but it is certainly a fact that L&D are required to accept all women with impending delivery.  it is looking out for the new innocent life about to be born.

Yeah so Kaiser accepted her long before she went into labor on the basis that the taxpayer would pay her bill.  But she publicly states that she is NOT on welfare and doesn't expect others help.  And that includes the $500/month food stamps she receives and 2 older children receiving disability payments.  One thing I noticed right away as she patted her newborn's head is she has a nice French manicure.  But we are all entitled, right?

Haha!  Exactly.  Isn't that the blessing of welfare, for our country?  Everyone is "entitled" to what they want.  That mentality is a poison on our society.  There is no "work towards", it's all about instant gratification.

Didn't say whether it was a record, but they were saying they were tired of it :-) I don't mind too much, so long as it doesn't stick and mess up the roads, but it would be nice to be able to leave the house without a coat.

I still dream of moving to Oregon for the weather in spite of this thread. Today was a pretty nice day for March in Chicago. The high was 48 so we took Eli to the park. I couldn't believe that I saw kids wearing shorts. I guess that just shows how stir crazy we've all become.
