The Grammy Awards - Boooooo

Submitted by Sean on Tue, 02/13/2007 at 12:39pm.

OK,

So the Dixie Chicks may be talented musicians, but that album was certainly not worthy of Best Album of the Year award.  And they don't even write their own music (Sorry but Charlotte has proved me wrong).  Please.  Obviously the Academy is trying to make some political statement which is sad since there were many much better albums out then that.  Keep it about the music, not politics.  I must say I'll have to go back and listen to that album a few more times to see if I missed something other then their 1 hit they keep playing all the time.

I agree... I was suprised to see them win.  Did you see thier interview on the red carpet.  They asked if they regreted thier statments (I assumed on Bush and the war) and they said NO, they only regret that people think it's a "trend" to hate them and thier concert sales are showing that.  It was a wierd statement to make.  They were almost laughing it off, until they said thier concert and record sales had dipped, then they looked mad, or something.  It was just wierd.

Ya, her comments for each acceptance were a bit retarded too.  It seemed to me the other two girls were really just wanting her to shutup before she said something stupid again.  Marty and her sister were the only ones that ever made any genuine comments.

Cee-lo at a Gnarls Barkley concert

Personally, I prefer the music of Cee-lo Green, the rapper musician shown above, who performs with Gnarls Barkley. Being a rapper fan, I enjoy the melodramic composition of greats such as Eminem and Snoop Dog (one of my favorites).

The rappers have plenty of interesting stuff to say, but that ain't music. There should be an entirely separate classification for hip hop and rap - hybrid poetry? Which one of the rappers will be named the U.S. poet laureate - after all, Robert Frost has been dead for over 40 years.

You're right, Sean. I checked the CD case, and all 14 songs were written by Emily Robison, Martie Maguire and Natalie Maines. Oh wait! That's the Dixie Chicks! I know you were probably rooting for Justin, and I'm a little embarrassed to say I loved that CD as well, but strip away the electronica and does he really have much of a voice? How about poor James Blunt trying so hard to hit those notes live? Guess we'd better keep him in the studio! Continuum was fine, but bland -- not John Mayer's best. I like Gnarls Barkley's overplayed "Crazy", but I have to be honest and say I never listened to the rest of the CD. The Chicks are amazing musicians, they won by a "Landslide" and I'd give anything for Natalie's powerful voice AND her gutsiness!

I finally watched most of the Grammy's, still have a few minutes left.  But, I just really need to talk bad against Mary J Blige.  Does anybody know anybody that has ever bought her album?  Does anybody know where she even came from?  I think her voice is terrible.  In her performances, which have been way too frequent lately, when she tries to come across as 'emotionally involved in her music', it looks more like convulsions, or giving birth.  And i am shocked and disappointed in U-2 for allowing her to blaspheme their "One" song.

Last year, it was some other unknown dude that just started winning everything - John Legend.  I never heard his song before the show, and now, i've still never heard his music, outside of award shows.  And he just sits there and plays the piano.  And with the likes of Shelley, Brittany, Ralph, Frances, and many many more, when it comes to piano, it takes a lot to impress a Severson.

Well Charlotte, I may stand corrected, and if so I recind that statement but they did in fact thank the 'song writers' during one of their acceptance speeches.  No I'm not a Justin fan or a Rapper fan.  I do like some rap but not the big broadway stage productions it's takes for them to sing a song on the Grammy's. I really like when people like the Chilli Peppers (or the Dixie Chicks) just go up and sing a song and their done.  No big production and nonsense surrounding it.  Even the Chilli Peppers latest album has several hits off of it.  It and many others would have been a better choice for Album of the year.  James Blunt was really reaching wasn't he?

"Not Ready To Make Nice" is listed as words & music by Emily Robison, Martie Maguire, Natalie Maines and Dan Wilson in that order, and yes they thanked Dan Wilson in their speeches. It's not alphabetical, so I'm assuming the order is indicative of the "weight" of each writer. There were other additional writers on the album as well -- Sheryl Crow, Keb Mo and Neil Finn get last credit on various songs, but Emily gets top billing on all the songs but one, "Favorite Year" where top billing goes to Martie. Martie also wrote "Cowboy Take Me Away" that I used in your wedding video. That's probably WAAY more Chicks info than you needed, huh Sean? Geof -- you better hope Grandma never gets on TurtleFox or she's gonna whip your behind! Francis is the male spelling "I as in his". Frances is the female spelling "E as in her". How is it you've never heard this before? Maybe you weren't listening? I must say I like John Legend. I like Corinne Bailey Rae and John Mayer as well. But why did they decide to put these three together? It seemed like it was 3 separate performances, and the other two just hung out onstage while one sang. I was really looking forward to seeing The Police, and Sting was in top form -- that guy is buff for an old man! But why did they choose Roxanne? They had so many other, better songs. Maybe they chose it because it was their first big hit. My final thought on the Grammys -- do people really watch this thing without TiVo/DVR/VCR? Who can sit through 3 1/2 hours??

My final comment is the best voice around is Christina Aguilera.  HOWEVER!!!  On this particular night, she started convulsing like Mary J Blige, and falling on the floor and flailing around, like there was a swarm of bees coming out of the microphone.  I couldnt believe it.  I've never seen her do that before.  But, sound for sound here they are:

  1. Christina Aguilera
  2. Carrie Underwood
  3. Geoff
  4. anybody else in the world
  5. everyone else in the world
  6. Mary J Blige

OK Charlotte, I'll give them credit for writing, but I still can't do best Album.  Since I am NOT biased I WILL try and listen to the album more to see if I can find anything else good.  'Not read to make nice' is a good song and in fact it keeps ringing in my ears even though I haven't heard it since the Grammy's. 'Cowboy' is a good song and is in fact what changed my opinion of the 'chicks'.  That's a lot coming from a guy who nearly despises country music.

Yes, I think the Police were the other big dissapointment of the night.  I am a huge Police fan, Sting looked good, but I was dissapointed in the song choice and how they sounded.  So many other good songs they could have chosen.

I agree, I don't know from what woodwork they pulled Mary J out of.  I suspect she'll be gone as fast as she came.

Totally agree with you there on Christina and Mary. Carrie has really come a long way! I got her CD a couple of weeks ago and was really impressed. I don't think I can vote on Geoff as I haven't heard enough. Maybe you could sing for us at the next family dinner? Geez, was this heated? I better start using emoticons, as I was pretty much laughing through all my posts. I do always need to be right, though because I am a Severson! Brent & I really only watched the Grammys because we knew the Dixie Chicks had won everything and we wanted to see if Martie would thank Brent for getting her husband out of the house on that golf outing so she could go Grammy dress shopping. No such luck. She didn't even thank her husband! (Well, and I also watched because I think Sting's a hottie).

I'll allow you to think Sting is a hotty, cuz he probably is.  I havent checked lately.  But, when i saw him sing in Park City, when i was on a date, i was really bored.  This was his "Fields of Gold" era, so perhaps that was past his prime.  I enjoyed the Police, way back when, and yah, the performance at the Grammy's was pretty blah to me too.  Not a big fan of that song Roxanne, cuz they say it too many times at the end of the song.  Just like Message in a Bottle... over and over.

Sorry Chaco, this site has several known issues on the mac, including uploading pictures, which hey, since you have so many pictures, do you mind trying to upload a photo album (multiple files at once), and let me know how it goes? Jim Hill reported problems using that tool on his mac. Just want to see if its ALL Mac's that have this issue. I don't own a mac so its tough for me to get all these kinks worked out for you mac people. If only Steve Jobs had of never come back, life would be so much easier for us programmers.

But then I couldn't make all the movies I make you watch at the reunions! Jay -- I tried uploading an album of photos. First, I left the photos full size but the program stalled after uploading the first photo. Then I reduced all the photos to 640x480, but it still stalled after just one photo. So at this point, I have to upload the photos one at a time same as Jim.

Pink sang a boring song, but did an awesome cirque du soleil thing that proved she actually spent some time thinking about her performance.

Beyonce sang good, but ruined her song & performance by flailing her head around the entire song like her neck was having a seizure.

Gaga proved she had talent, but her performance ended kind of boring.

Green Day ranks #1 in my book.  Awesome sound, with a broadway twist.

Taylor Swift, once again, proved she cannot sing.  How does she win awards?  She's can't hit notes, and is always pitchy.  I've tried to like her, cuz her songs are really good, but wow, this is at least 6 times in a row she has blown it "live".

Black-eyed peas wore out the song, with an entirely too-long rendition.  And once again, their costumes were just weird and made no sense.

Pretty much sums it up for me.  I had the 5.1 surround sound cranked up for Green Day and the Michael Jackson tribute.  Green Day shows how to perform live once again and sound so good it could be playing on the CD.  The performance with the Broadway musicians was great.

Taylor Swift, album of the year, c'mon.  She's a nice girl with some talent and my little girls like her but that doesn't qualify for all the awards she getting with that horribly pitchy live voice.  She should have just been quiet and let the professional (Stevie Nicks) sing the song.

Elton shows how incredible he is live with Gaga.  Gaga is just as weird but interesting as ever.  When I saw her outfit sitting in her seat I laughed out loud.  Her outfit onstage was just a little skimpy though.

Pink shows how good she is while soaking wet and swinging from the rafters.  She ticks everybody off below her by dumping water on their tuxs and $15,000 dresses.

Stephen Colbert with another hilarious monologue.  Puts the academy in their place once again.  The Susan Boyle bit was hilarious.

The Michael Jackson tribute just made me realize how much I'm gonna miss him as an artist.  I've seen the movie, it's pretty good.  He was a weird dude, but very talented.

I fast forwarded through ALL country performances.  LOL.

Just couldn't really get into Bon Jovi.  Neither one of those songs were any I cared about.  Never been a big Bon Jovi fan.

Man, funny to go back and read the old comments.  I have since come to appreciate the Dixie Chicks a little more musically, however there have been several accusations of Autotuning their songs.  I think the list of Autotuning users is probably endless and will include a lot of my favorite artists unfortunately.  The only way to decide who really has talent is to hear them live and for that reason I think the Taylor Swift is a heavy Autotune user.  Green Day sounds like they have no need for any additional help.

My thoughts exactly on all of it. It's like you guys read my mind. Lady Gaga is seriously talented and all her songs are super catchy and are on the radio all the time...Taylor Swift is fun and all, but yeah, not THAT talented to where she deserved that many awards. Gaga gets shafted in the awards dept probably because she is so weird and doesnt have your typical teeny bopper look or your typical R&B sexy look either. she's in a category of her own.

What I couldnt figure out was how/when did the grammy people start to think that most american homes have 3d glasses in them? Did I miss the public service announcement that I needed to go down to target and buy them before the show? for that matter, where in the world DO you buy 3d glasses? Does 7-11 sell them these days? AM/PM ?

I didn't like Pink's song the first time, but now that i've heard it twice more since then I actually like those melo songs. It's what I prefer listening to when i program.  Colbert was hilarious with the iPad.

Beyonce and Fergy (Furgy?) were their usual eye candy...wow.

And yes, same thing I told Lynh, nobody came close to Green Day's performance, that was the bomb. Michael Jackson tribute was probably 2nd. Taylor Swift sounded really awful..I was cringing.

Dave Matthew's wasn't bad, but his stuff all kinda sounds the same.

Robert Downey Jr is a stud, adam sandler is funny.

and.....Why aren't michael jackson's kid's half black??? did i miss something? did michael jackson actually have his black genes removed when he dyed his skin?

I can't for the life of me figure out Taylor Swift. It's like she has some sort of stranglehold on all the other musicians, to where they just clap when she sings instead of booing. Like, her dad invented music or something, and so all the artists just have to put up with her and smile.  She is terrible, and nobody seems to want to say it out loud.  She's a fun little something for the kids to enjoy, but world class?  Pu-leez.

I waited until tonight to watch Michael in 3-D.  I got lucky.. when i bought This Is It on Blue-Ray, there was a free stack of 3-D glasses for the grammy appearances.  So I grabbed 4 of them.  But yah, no idea how you were SUPPOSED to know about it.

and yah, Autotuner is equal to steroids.  I think we basically assume everyone uses it, and that puts most everyone on an even playing field, as far as albums go.  I don't know enough about it to know if it can be used "live" to make people sound better (not robotic like Jamie Foxx).  But if GreenDay wasn't using it, then yah, they were the natural best by a mile.

Barry Bonds was the best baseball player.  Everyone was on 'roids, and still he was the best.

Ya, the iPad was hilarious.  Robert Downey Jr. will go down as one of my favorite drug abusers.  Adam Sandlers little appearance was pretty funny.  You're right, all Dave Mathews stuff sounds the same.  I fast forwarded right through that performance too.

I believe Lady Gaga actually did win a couple grammys that were given out off air.  There's a lot of little stuff they don't show on TV.  There's a picture I saw this morning somewhere of her sitting in her seat with that massive 'thing' on top of her head and the guy sitting behind her looks like he's trying to see around it.

okay, finished it.

The 3-D michael tribute was pretty fresh with 3-D glasses.  I saved the file and kept the glasses.

The 2nd half of the show was really boring.  Bon Jovi, Dave Matthews, the rap trio, and good heavens to mergatroit, can we please tell Mary J Blige that she is severely over-rated?  She was missing so many notes.  I felt bad for Bocelli that he was stuck singing with her.  His voice is 100% perfect, and she is doing that "waaaah naaaaah wweeee WOOOOO woooo yaaaah yahhhhh" crap all up and down, with the hand and the big open mouth, head cocked back stuff.  He stands there, doesnt move a thing, and blows some serious pipes.

Ya, it was on the news a lot, that Michael probably had a sperm donor. If you looked at the other kids on the stage who were their cousins, they looked completely different and you could tell they were half black.

That's how I feel every time I see Taylor Swift on stage, she is so off key and I literally cringe cause she is NOT GOOD live! I love her songs on the radio tho, haha.

Tyler said the same thing, "Was I suppose to get 3-D glasses?!?" I'm like, I dunno, who has them just laying around the house to grab to watch something like this? Kinda funny. I liked seeing some of the rappers have like all black frames of the 3-D glasses, like they were wearing the most stylish ones they could find.

I missed Green Day and Stephen Colbert, turned it on just in time for Michael's tribute, which was SO good.

I actually really liked Gaga's dress on the red carpet, the orbital looking one. Missed her and Pink's performance too =(
