taxing a business card

Submitted by geoff on Wed, 01/14/2009 at 5:20pm.

so i was working on some business cards for a client, and i got to thinking about how much money the government makes off these business cards.

They get money from the permits needed by the logging company to get the trees.  And they get some money from the truck drivers as they have to be licensed and registered to drive.  They get money from the fuel to put in their trucks.  They get money from the cigarettes that the truck drivers smoke while they drive.

The government takes another cut from the paper mills that employ workers.  They take another cut from each employees paycheck.  They take another cut from the business card company that takes my order and prints the cards.  They take a cut from the shipping company.

Then they take a cut from the check I receive from my client, when I have to pay taxes.

And somehow, the government is in debt and needs to raise taxes?

When you have spent time looking at the oregon legislative staff, their budgets and how their money "needs to be spent in one fiscal year so they don't lose it in the next" you begin to understand why we need all of the taxes.

Great comment Steve, I would have to agree.  ??    :-)  But I must say that YES, sheesh, HOW much money did the government make off little business cards?!

Yes...I've thought of this as well...and fully understand why all those Vietnamese Pho restaurants are "cash only". At least someone is willing to take a stand...legal or not.

Someone probably paid a tax for this blog to be submitted online and a tax was probably paid for each response  Just think how cool it would be if we could charge someone a tax to be paid to us, such as taxing the person who comes to read the gas/water meters in order to access your property.  Or taxing the phone company for allowing their wires to be run all throughout your house and then every time they come on a service call.  How about a tax to be paid by everyone that sends you a text message when you hate getting them and wished you didn't but don't have it blocked as you sometimes need it?  Of course this doesn't resolve the governments current debt issues but it might help to relief some of my own

nope, I decided to try going full-time freelance.  It got to the point where I either needed to tell some people "no", or continue to tell them all "yes" and quit my full time job.  So far so good - been really busy.
