Just received this email and thought it was rather interesting so thought I would share.

How ingenius--that is so cool.  I agree we need a nice change like that.  Thanks for sharing.

Great idea.  Although, it would never generate energy on any stretch of highway that Sean happened to be traveling on.

Oh you're right!  We would have to confine Sean to Oregon.  I know how he hates the sun and blue skies! ha ha!

I'd seen this a few months ago.  Looks interesting.  It just looks like it would be awful slippery when wet.  Imagine driving on glass?  Messages in the road are also not so great an idea in my opinion.  Just seeing the massive amounts of brake lights caused by some dumb message on a amber alert sign is testament enough that people cannot drive and read at the same time without a foot on the brake pedal.  Maybe they could put messages like "your going to slow and holding up traffic"  Generating solar power from miles of road is a great idea though if they can pull it off.  And yes, north of the california border those would take 3000 years to pay for themselves.

I saw this a few weeks ago too, and I thought it was a great idea.  I doubt it will replace all highways and byways, but I think it will see limited implementation in and around urban areas where there aren't too many high rises to shade the surfaces.

Does seem pretty cool. I always wonder whether there is some side effect we don't realize. Like he says, the highway is soaking up the heat anyway, so might as well save it as power. But what does it do now? I guess it goes back into the atmosphere, maybe? Would this cause global cooling?
