My $12M dollar web site project

Submitted by geoff on Fri, 01/14/2011 at 10:28am.

I've been at Beckman Coulter now for over a year on a web site re-architecture project.  It's hard to understand how a site can cost $12 million unless you understand all the unbelievable complexities of what is going on in the backend.  Which I won't attempt to explain.  Just watch this short teaser.  Today is a huge milestone as we hit the internal delivery. Public launch is set for March.

The video should work, but you won't be able to click the beta link to go any further.

Cool site. Nice work.

I've used Beckman Coulter products -- I used this cool machine called the coulter counter that you could pour powder into and it would tell you the size distribution of the particles in your powder.

Sweet, dude.  Yah, I'm familiar with the Coulter Counter.  It is in our Industrial line of products. There are a few models, but probably something similar to this:

Wow, pretty amazing. That's about 11.9 million more dollars than our budget to build chess.com or exercise.com.

What do you do, Ben, that you would use that?

Yea Ben, I am interested to hear what type of "powder" quality you are gauging.

So $11.9 was spent on the video?

Nice upgrade, Geoff. But it's crazy that web sites cost so much. I'm guessing that Ben used the counter in some of his PhD  (Chemical Engineering) research, but he'll have to let us know for sure.

I also use a beckman coulter instrument called the "coulter counter."  When I am culturing human cells I use it on a weekly basis to count cells of course.

That's cool, Paul.  Why are you culturing human cells?  Would love to sit and listen to what Paul and Ben do.
