Movie Recommendation

Submitted by Jay on Wed, 06/24/2009 at 12:53am.

Lynh and I just finished a movie I recorded off of showtime called "Into the Wild". Wasn't expecting anything since I record all kinds of movies I've never heard of and most turn out to be pretty average. Was really pleasantly surprised by this movie. Anyone else seen it? Like it? If not, definitely think its worth watching. I rarely do this b/c I hate recommending movies and then people saying it was horrible, but just couldn't resist on this one. Here is how I think my family would stack up on this one:

Sean: was alright, but rather be watching motocross

Geoff: Love it

Scott: Pretty awesome

Michelle: too R

Robie: boring and dumb

Jodie: rather be watching hgtv

Jodi: too R

Dave: awesome

Alesha: depressing

Tyler: awesome

Valorie: Asleep after 10 minutes

Brad: In bed after 5 minutes

Clark: interesting

Dawn: sad

Disclaimer: Rated R

Also while I'm talking about TV/movies, anyone else watch "I shouldn't be alive" ? That's gotta be THE best show on TV. Love it, never miss an episode...thoroughly enjoy it more than 9/10 movies I watch.

The critics and the viewers on Yahoo both gave it a B+.  But I remember that when it was being blitzed on TV, I found out how it ended.  Dawn won't watch movies that end like that.  I wouldn't mind seeing it, but would have to watch it when Dawn is not around...  I saw an episode of "I shouldn't be alive", and it was good.  But I don't remember what day / time it is on, but must be when we are usually not in front of the tube.

We'll check it out...we love watching movies and are always up for recommendations! I've seen a tiny bit of that show, I think it's pretty awesome. Just don't get to watch TV very much cause when I'm able to none of the good shows are on, gotta get Tivo!

I read the book by John Krakaur and liked it.  But, I haven't seen the movie.

I'm with Larry. I also read the book and enjoyed it. He's the same author that wrote "Into Thin Air" about the Mount Everest disaster. But I haven't seen the movie. Good to know that you enjoyed it, though.

Thanks for the clarification on the other title, Aimee.  I was thinking I read something by Krakaur, but it didn't sound right.  I read "Into Thin Air".  My memory is horrible!

I Shouldn't Be Alive really is the best show on TV.  It has a great format, and you can never beat true stories.

Into the Wild was a great show.  Saw it a few years ago.  Another one similar to this is the Grizzly Man.  Rated R because of a short tirade that he goes into about the government, laced with profanity.  But the rest is amazing.  It's about the guy that goes and lives with grizzly bears for a few months every year.  (If you are planning on watching it, then don't read on)  But basically, at the end of one season, he is boarding the plane and gets in a verbal fight with the stewardess.  So he gets back off the plane, and goes back into the wilderness with the grizzlies.  He knew better, because the grizzlies are more aggressive at the end of a season just before hibernating, and that he should NOT be there.  And sure enough, he and his girlfriend were attacked and eaten by a bear.  True story.

Aaron and I saw it and we both thought it was great. It gave us a lot to think about and talk about. I would recommend it.

I also saw Into Thin Air and thought it was very captivating. Of course, captivating to be can be extremeley boring to others (i.e. JoAnn). I would recommend that one too. I think about that film every time I visit a mountain with snow on it (which we did alot of this month - Rainer, Lassen, Olympics - check out our blog for pics).

I remember the grizzly guy and his girl friend being killed by a bear.  They had a video cam running that got knocked down, but kept recording.  Pretty horrible to hear.

right.  the video camera also had the lens cap on, but the audio was clear.  they didn't play the audio, on the movie, but they show a guy listening to it.  he was obviously disturbed by the sounds.  they handed the tapes to an old girlfriend of the grizzly man, and also a watch they retrieved from the bear after they went out and killed it.  the old girlfriend has the tapes, and will not publish them.  pretty wild stuff.   not sure why the bear was killed, just cuz it ate some guy that tried to hang out with them.

Jay, you are GOOD.  I was asleep in 10 minutes and Brad went to bed in 5.  We watched it with Dave and Jodi.  I will let them make their comments.  I was soooo tired and I wanted to watch it but no chance.  I am still planning on watching the end so I don't listen to their comments as they discussed it.

Mom's comment was a little confusing but yes, Dave and I liked Slumdog.  I watched it from a distance for the first half, while cleaning and such so I didn't "feel" the emotions of the torture, just followed the story and it got reeeeally good.  What a unique movie.  Haven't seen one of those in over 2 years.  Into the Wild yes a little too much skin so "too R" but still liked it. A movie I was thinking about for a few days.

Ty and I watched it. Tyler liked it and of course had to watch all the extras and look up all the info on the internet after. I liked it, I would say I thought it was more interesting than depressing. Wish I could say more about it but I know there's people who haven't seen it on here. But I too thought about it for a few days after watching it.

Yeah, interesting was a paraphrase from your guess, but I too wikipedia'd the guy to learn more.  In short, I think he was suffering from an environmentally induced mental illness.  I think he was running away from the emotional conflict that his parents imposed upon him.  I think his personality was unfortunately born in the wrong place at the wrong time, and he couldn't handle it, so he just wanted to check out of society.  I think his relationship with the old guy was poignant, and he pondered trusting someone enough to let down his guard and feel loved.  But in the end, kept his guard up and continued to run away.

We just watched The Cove.  A documentary on dolphins and Japan.  It's pretty good with some stealth operations.  It features the guy who helped make the tv show Flipper.

Don't think I'd be able to watch that one. We just watched "You Don't Know Jack" We thought it was good and a good conversation piece. Not Rated but only thing bad is about 4 F words.

Just saw Water for Elephants.  Pretty good, I'd recommend it.  Lincoln Lawyer also good.  Rated R, but not really for any reason we could find except maybe violence which wasn't all that much.

Water for Elephants was good, seriously?  I heard it was a bore fest.  The Cove is definitely good.  Makes you furious.  Just watched 127 Hours.  Interesting, a little too artsy for me, when they are going inside his brain and showing what he is thinking about.  But what else are they supposed to show for 90 minutes while this guy's arms is stuck under a rock.  Clever, just wasn't my favorite.

Ya, it actually was.  No, not Blackhawk Down, but still entertaining and packing the theaters.  Ours was packed and it's been out a while.

During church yesterday it dawned on me and I leaned over to Michelle and said, "if the dolphins are so smart, why don't they just jump over the net ropes?"
