Mistaken Lyrics

Submitted by benluke on Wed, 03/19/2008 at 7:25pm.

I just heard this song on the radio which really caught my attention. It really sounds like he is saying Severson (the wrong pronunciation, but good enough) Now I know that I'm the kind of guy that always hears something other than what the lyrics are really saying, but maybe if the rest of you listen for it, you can hear it too.

And this begs the question. What is the funniest mistaken lyrics situation you have ever heard?

Haha, I just looked at the name of the song and started laughing!  You could easily mistake that for Severson (grocery clerk style) if you were listening to it on the radio, all of our ears are trained to hear that, and then correct it!!!

My favorite is "HOLD ME CLOSER TONY DANZZZAA" by Elton John.  Some mistake this song as saying, "hold me close tiny dancer"

'Blinded by the light, rapped up like a douche in the moment of the night'

Haha, now i KNOW that's not what they are saying but for years I've heard that song and have no idea what they are saying.  I will search for the correct lyrics right now and post them.

OK, I feel like I'm not the only idiot now.  I found this on wikipedia.

The chorus of the song (Springsteen version) features the commonly misunderstood lyric, "Blinded by the light, cut loose like a deuce, another runner in the night." ("Deuce" refers to a '32 Ford Deuce Coupe.) Many listeners hear the word "douche" in place of "deuce."[1]

Now who can understand any Eddy Vedder Lyrics (who's real last name by the way is Severson, I checked with Ralph and no relation)

'Freezin, rests his head on a pillow made of concrete'

Here is 'Blinded by the Light' the song I was referring to:  (Deuce or not, the guy still sounds like he's saying Douche)

My favorite "Mistaken Lyrics" story is for the song is "Two of Hearts" by Stacey Q.  Joe thought forever (when he was younger and even not so young) that it was a dirty song because he thought that it said "two odd parts, two parts that beat as one"!!! - instead of "two of hearts, two hearts that beat at one" I still laugh when I think about it.  We even had an "argument" about it.  I told him that in Jr. high my mom used that song for a dance routine and we had the words on the back of the album, and that it said "two of hearts", he wasn't so sure, so I had to prove it!!

I can't think of any funny lyric stories right now, but I did like the video. He definitely needs to work on his pronunciation, he's not saying Severson or Seventh Son very well :-) But I like the idea of playing it at a reunion!

That is sooooo funny, Ben.  I have listened to that song for years and never thought of it as Severson--guess I always knew it was 7th son, but when I listened to it as Severson it is pretty cool.

Cami I saw Stacy Q in concert in Salem years ago when I was in high school.  She was the opening act for the JETS!  I got dragged into it by a friend with free tickets of course....

Man, I have to say after watching Blinded by the Light on you tube again I think wikipedia is wrong.  It looks like he's saying 'rapped' or 'revved up'

Well the Bruce Springsteen version and the Manfred Mann's versions have different lyrics just to make it more confusing.  Springsteen says 'cut loose', Manfred says 'revved up'.  I've always heard the Manfred version, I'm not a Springsteen fan.

That's pretty funny.  I've watched this new show a couple times recently called "Don't Forget the Lyrics" - basically you sing along with a song like karaoke with the words on a screen and at a certain point they stop giving you the words and you have to sing them on your own.  It's amazing how hard it is to come up with the actual words even if you know the song well.

Yes we all get tired of the mispronounciation of our name but the final blow came this morning when I was trying to stop our mail while we are away. the automated voice asked for this and that bit of infomation  and repeating it in tha dead automated voice.  When she got to reapeating our last name after I had spelled it in as directed she had the nerve to say it the way we all have to correct and since she is a machine I could't eve correct her.  Very frustating!!!

Because my hearing has always been lousy, I have just made up words that fit the syncopation; "more than a woman" was "bald headed woman"; "don't throw it all away, our love" was "don't throw it all away on love".  "Go ahead be gone with it" is "Go Jeffrey Dahmer"...  Also, when people call our house and ask for somebody by the name of Sehverson, I always just say, "no one by that name lives here!"  heheh!

I could never figure out what the Beatles meant by "Take The Back Right Turn". Where were they going? I only discovered recently that it was actually "Paperback Writer".

Haha... youngest children always take the cake on these sorts of issues.  Billy Joel's "keeping the faith" song had me confounded for years... I thought he was singing, "Heard about SIX but not enough..." well, the mistake is obvious enough...but the really great part is that I asked some poor unsuspecting older brother of mine about it...

ME: That's funny... he doesn't know enough about six.
BROTHER: uh... yeah...
ME: What? like he knows it's after five but not before seven or something?
BROTHER: Yeah... that's probably it...

That Billy Joel story is hilarious! My addition to the mistaken lyrics is "Rizzel" from the movie Grease. Some say that the real name is Rizzo, but they are mistaken, just ask Uncle Brandt, we've had many debates over this one

Any debate with Kellyn is fun, but I'm always right!!
