Mailynn's Super Power Discovered?

Submitted by Jay on Thu, 12/20/2007 at 9:53am.

I'm just wondering if anyone elses kids have some kind of weird super human power, cause it seems that we've discovered what Mailynn's is.

Ever since Mailynn could speak a few words, she has always amazed us at her ability to spot things from a very long distance away. The first noticable things was planes. We'd be driving in a car anywhere and she'd say, "Plane plane." Lynh and I would be looking all over for a plane, and then finally spot a tiny speck out in the clouds a long ways away, "oh right Mailynn, there is a plane."

This has been a normal thing for us now, at the grocery store, malls, walking around, anything. She'll frequently say things like, "Look its Pooh" at Target and we'll be standing in the middle of the electronics section, and it'll take me a good 5 minutes to locate him. Then there he is up, way over there up on the rack behind a bunch of other obstacles, and she's spotted him. And it's not like we were standing there for a long time, its simply in walking by.

At the grocery store, we'll be over in the frozen foods section, and she'll say, "Look its Dora!" and we'll stop look around, no, i dont see any dora..."OVER THERE!" and then 8 aisles down in the produce section are some tiny little balloons and one of them has a picture of Dora on it. "Wow Mailynn, you're right, there's Dora."

Well yesterday and today she took it to a new "wow" level for us. I was still sleeping as Mailynn and Lynh were heading out and I heard a blood curdling scream coming from Mailynn. I ran out thinking she'd fallen down the stairs or something, but nope, she says, "SPIDER!!". Her super power vision and absolute fear of any small insects do not go hand-in-hand very well. She's standing at the top of the stairs crying and pointing at the "spider". We have Christmas decorations wrapping our bannister so we think maybe its buried in there somewhere. We look for a good 10 minutes and come up empty handed, but there are a ton of shadows that look like spiders created by the pine needles and the lights.

We explain to Mailynn that it was just a shadow, she doesn't buy it. So finally we say, "oh, we got it." She just looks at us with a "i'm not so convinced" kinda face. She says, "It's on the tree" pointing towards the star at the top. We examine the tree for 5 minutes, nothing. "Ok Mailynn, we got it, lets go" and we finally get her to come down the stairs ever so cautiously.

Today, I'm sitting here working in my office and Mailynn and Lynh are heading out the door again and same thing, another blood curdling scream. I run out and Mailynn is once again standing at the top of the stairs "SPIDER!!!" and crying uncontrollably. So I see all the same shadows, "Mailynn its just a shadow. Show mommy and daddy where's the spider."  She keeps pointing at the tree, but I dont' beleieve her because the tree is downstairs and any spider hiding in it is surely invisible to her from way up here 15 feet away. Finally Lynh leans way over the bannister at the bottom of the stairs and peers into the star on the tree, "oh dad, there is a spider".  I'm like, "WHAT??!!  LET ME SEE!" I go down the stairs and from a foot away, I can finally see the culprit, a TINY (ant size) BLACK spider nestled in the corner of our star on top of the tree. "NO WAY! HOW IN THE WORLD DID SHE SEE THAT FROM WAY UPSTAIRS??!!"

Anyhow, we have learned almost never to doubt her when she claims she sees something, even if we have no idea what she's talking about.

No, this is an inherited trait from her Grandmother. Her grandmother (Valorie) can;

--smell things that no one else can

--see spots on clothes that I or no one else would ever see

--notice things in general that I never see or catch.

--and lastly--see the fine print in all papers that I would have never noticed.

Its really a good trait to have....

haha, that is really cool.... i remember when i was down there and we were driving by the canal/ditch that parallels Capitol Expressway.  She said, "there's a duck!"  I looked around and took me quite a while to see it because the female ducks blend in really well with the terrain, but Mailynn saw it pretty quickly.

There are some of us that see, smell or hear things that go unnoticed by others.  Sometimes it's a good thing, sometimes it can be disturbing, you just learn to live with it and not be too demanding of those around you.  My vision is not like Mailynn's but i really notice a lot of things that other people don't.  Comes in handy for finding your way around.   She'll learn to live with it and please teach her that maybe spiders are scary but there are a lot of little insects that are not, like lady bugs, praying mantises etc.

What have I been telling you both? Mailynn is a gold mine! Start investing...I'll start, can I buy 10% of Mailynn?

See, Mailynn had no choice but to be keenly observant of all around her. Not only fher Grandma but also her Great Grandma  both have extraordinary sense perception!

Hahhahaha great story Jay, hilarious.  So Mai has the sight and Sean's kids have the hearing - that's for sure. Macy's got a pretty strong suck, I would put her up against Ally suck-a-hand any day.  :-)
