Items Needed for Guatemalan Orphanage!

Submitted by kmseverson on Sun, 06/01/2008 at 8:39pm.

I am traveling to Guatemala for two weeks following the reunion to volunteer with the group Pan en la Boca. I went to Guatemala with this group two summers ago and worked on various projects including reroofing a house, installing a water line, pouring a cement floor etc. Although we worked on multiple projects last trip, the group chose to focus our attention on one orphanage that desperately needs volunteers, supplies, and money. The reason why I am posting this on turtlefox is that I figured what other family would have more hand me down clothes than the Seversons??

The orphanage basically needs anything and everything for little children: clothes (any size, new or used, boy or girl), shoes, pajamas, socks, underwear, crib sheets/bedding, twin sized bedding, cloth diapers, bottles, formula, diaper rash medicine, vitamins, school supplies, computer supplies, office supplies, personal care items...

I am sure many of you have old children's stuff sitting around your house collecting dust, so if you would like to donate any of it this is a very worthy cause. If you have the extra room in your suitcases, the easiest way for me to get everything would be if you can bring it to the reunion so I can bring it down to Guatemala with me. I am going to personally bring all the donations down to Guatemala and to the orphanage, so you can be assured that it will all be given to the children.

Thanks so much guys!!! After having been to Guatemala once before, I know first hand that the children there are so appreciative of EVERYTHING, so any little thing you could give would be appreciated and loved! If any of you want to see pictures of the orphanage or of the children living there, the orphanage director started a blog  http://casadesion.blogspot.com/

Count us in, Kellyn.  How will you get all of this stuff to Guatamala?

That was my next question.  But I'll see what I can stuff in our suitcases after I pack for the reunion!  Sounds fun Kellyn.

That sounds great.  Maybe I can gather some things here from my ward and carry an extra suitcase.

We'll check and see what we can donate.  Can you bring back a baby for us?

Kellyn I have a couple of plastic grocery bags of small bars of soap and small packets of shampoo.  I would like to tell you a story about children from guatamala.  i have a piano student very dark complexion with beautiful dark brown eyes.  doesn't resemble either parent.  one day i asked him where he got his brown eyes.  his dad spoke up and said they came from Guatamala.  They adopted him and went back two years later and adopted a baby girl.  they are a really nice family from around the corner on Leander Rd. Will see what else we can come up with.

When I go to Guatemala, I'm packing all my stuff in a carryon sized bag so that I can use the two 50lb suitcases I'm allowed to check purely for orphanage stuff. And since all the people in my group of about 20 is doing the same thing, we should be able to get it all down there. If not, the leader of the group goes to Guatemala at least 3 times a year, so she can bring additional stuff down in her future trips.

And Grandma, thanks again for calling!! That was a great story!
