How dumb is a spider?

Submitted by geoff on Wed, 09/26/2007 at 1:50pm.

I have a spider in my side-view mirror on my car.  Every morning as I'm driving to work, I reach out and destroy his beautiful little web.  This has been going on for probably 2-3 weeks now.  I'm wondering:

  1. how long can a spider go without food?
  2. and how long until this mentally challenged spider realizes that the probability of a bug landing in his web going 75 mph down I-5 are very slim?  and that he should get a real estate agent and move.

hahhahaha How annoying to have to wipe your window EVERY morning.  that's one thing about nature - it's very persistent!   And considering the size of a spider, they have pretty small brains Geoffy.

Maybe when you open the door, he quickly climbs into your car with you.  Then he travels down the inside of your door and up your pant leg and eats your blood for 45 minutes.  The web is just there to throw you off, part of his little devilish plan.  Spiders actually have really high IQ's and this one isn't interested in eating flying insects anymore.

if he went up geoff's pant leg he wouldnt make it out alive, the stench form a previous night of burrito eating would end his spider life. Instead the spider cleverly web up the back of geoff's head and at the slow speed that geoff walks he catches plenty of bugs. As the garge closes the spider jumps back on to the side view mirror to trick geoff once again.

I had a huge daddy longleg in my car for a couple weeks, that I saw once, thought I got it out, but it somehow made it back in, and built webs EVERYWHERE!!!  It was so irritating. I cleaned them out tons of times, i mean, all over the whole car...back window, passenger side leg space, behind both seats, by my mirror, steering wheel...that spider worked around the clock. I looked and looked and could never find him. Finally took it to the car wash, and told the worker (in very slow and clear english), there is a spider in my car. Please find it and kill it.

A few minutes later he comes up to me, "I found the spider!! It was HUGE! Under the seat, and I killed it."

So I gave him a $5 tip. I know, so generous of me.

Actually, Robie, the daddy long-leg spider, or as I commonly refer to them, the Pholcus phalangioides, actually does create a web.  And they tactically shake the web violently when prey lands in it, to blur the vision of its prey.

And no, they aren't the most poisonous spider in the world, that allegedly can't hurt humans cuz their teeth are too small.  That is a myth.  It was proven that their venom has a very mild affect, even on other insects.

Another easy way to get rid of the spider... just eat a burrito full of beans and fumagate your car with 'natural' gasses. Just ask thao or sebastien, they got potent stuff.

Wow, I am surprised to hear that daddy long legs make webs.  Wellllllll, Jay just looked it up and it seems there are 2 kinds of daddys and one makes a web and one doesn't.

So Geoff does a daddy long-leg spider really make webs?  Or should I call them phalangioides?

I can take a picture of a daddy long-leg in my house, as he sits in his web, if you'd like.  Yes, they make webs. I can see one from where I am standing.

wow! 22 comments so far! must be a new record on this page....well anyway theres one spyder that is probably the dumbest of all. I saw this spyder trying to bite me.....on a glass door..... he kept on biting even though he can't touch me. But then a bird just flew by the door and ate the spyder! the spyder kept on moving which is why it attracted the bird.

Yuk, spiders are creepy, hairy, nasty little creatures. I can't even look at the spider in Charlotte's Web. I'm glad there aren't any in my car--I would probably wreck if I saw one!!! You guys can keep them all and their nasty webs too

so, the story continues....  I got in my car yesterday morning, and had to wipe away another web from my mirror.  Man, i thought i had him.  So he was either reincarnated, or he left his property to his brother spider in his will.

I dunno Geoff... I have a spider that built a web in a similar location... and he seems to be adding on to his house a little every day.  I just let him keep building.  I figure it dramatically decreases the odds that my car will be broken into.  I mean, who would want to break into a car with spider webs on it? then you might get a spider on you... besides, who knows what spiders are thinking? He might be trying to tell you something in his web... like Charlotte's Web, but warning you about the end of the world or something... you never know...

Just now, when I was walking back home from school, I saw this spyder on the floor and he was standing there still. I was thinking he was dead but then a spyder went into the grass. Uh oh! here comes my neighborhood mowing the lawn! Yep you guessed it...he's probably dead by now. Spyder are really small, maybe that's why they don't have large brains...

I have a spider story...as I was driving the girls to school a couple months ago- under my shirt on my chest area was itching...so I itched and itched for a few seconds then decided to look...oh yes, a spider thought it would be funny to sit on my chest and catch a ride - and breakfast I might add .Thank God I wasn't in an accident. You can imagine the scene, screaming and wailing of hands and screaches and awkward funny body movement trying to get the spider off and drive with out an accident..and  like Geoff said, with a swift move of my hand-or two or three, spider-gone, game over, I win! He didn't get to enjoy his breakfast, for long!
