Golf Mystery

Submitted by Tim on Wed, 08/15/2007 at 8:11pm.

I hope Brandt, or Jacob can shed some light on this... it has been bothering me since our round of golf Sunday.

On the tenth hole Brandt hits a ball out of bounds and we watch it bounce on the road and into the bushes / field on the other side, a ball he had played at least three full rounds with....bummer to lose a faithful ball. Jacob also decided to hit one there, a brand new Calloway, his don't usually stay with him very long. They both had a short search, found a couple stray balls, unfortunately not their own. No mystery there that's just golf.

The mystery happened after we had finished playing and were on our way out. I decided to grab a soda and as I approached the snack window I noticed two balls sitting on a bench. After I got my soda and was walking back to join Brandt and Jacob, something told me to have a closer look at the two balls just sitting on the bench, no one around, I'll have look and see if they might be some decent balls? I was floored as I picked up the first a Nike Mojo, with a tell tale Logo, my God !! it was Brandt's old faithful, there was no doubt! The second....that's right, Jacob's Calloway. We got a good laugh and headed for the parking lot and didn't really discuss it much.

Now unless Brandt or Jacob had something to do with this, fess up if you did !!, I am totally baffled. How did those two balls get some 400 yards to that bench....Ok someone put them there. But who and why, no one knew what balls we were playing except us? No one knew I would walk on that side of the partition to get a soda and see the balls on the bench? Just those two balls sitting on the bench and no others? If someone went to the trouble of finding them across the street, why just leave them on a bench? I don't know why I even let the whole coincedence bother me....but it does? Hopefully airing it out in a blog will relieve my tortured mind?  What are the chances of this happening......0. Alright, now I'm going to shut this out of my mind...?

Yeah I would be in your same boat... Hmmm sounds like maybe Jacob and Brandt may have been pulling one over on you.

I think I have an explanation for this... magic. Those must be magical balls.

Yeah, it was really amazing . . . And I promise I had nothing to do with their re-appearance.  I just figured that someone playing 18 (or maybe a marshall) picked up the random balls he found and set them on the bench.  I like to think that he (whoever it was) picked up more than just those two (guess it could have been just those two, but man, like you said -- what are the chances?) and put the balls that he found on that bench.  As guys finished and came in, they grabbed their own lost balls, and by the time we got there, just mine and Jake's were left.  You may say, "No way -- anyone walking by there who would take a ball would take them all . . ."  I say: NO.  That's the nature of golfers -- it is a self-regulated game with a ton of honor.  It's one thing to pick up a lost ball out on the course and put it in your bag.  But not when they are put there to be re-claimed.  Even out on the course, the average golfer may see a $3 Pro V1, but if there is any chance that it might be the ball in play for some guy on a neighboring hole, most guys will leave it there.  I was very happy to have that ball back, as I have now played 54 holes with that ball (at the time that I lost him on #10 at Colwood National), and I can't wait to put it back in play this weekend, and see how long it'll stay with me!

Have I mentioned that I love golf?

Guess we'll never know who did it, all I know is it gave me a spooky, eerie feeling. Kind of like we were being watched, by who? and for what?  Just a paranoid shiver...too wierd!  Probably the Golf Gods, smiling and just messing with us...And, I also love that game.

No Brandt you do not have to tell us how much you love Golf.  Think it's great that you can have something you enjoy doing and can do it so much and so well!!

I'll mark this mystery as one I'll rewind and watch on the big screen after I die.  Until then, we must be patient Tim!  But now that you've shared the story I'll be stuck thinking of different answers to the mystery for days....Brandt's sounds pretty reasonable.

If you put them in the dryer with your socks, you're sure to lose at least one of these golf balls.
