development environments

Submitted by benluke on Mon, 12/03/2007 at 6:35pm.

This will probably go down as the most boring blog on this site.

I am looking for recomendations on a development environment to make web applications. I know there is a lot of experience out there in the family so I thought I'd ask.

Here are some details to let you know what I'm looking for/ my experience level.

What is the best?

What is Free?

For my Phd I programmed in C++ in a linux environment, and would consider setting up a linux box at home if that is best. At work I now use Microsoft Visual Studio and write in C# to make Forms, but $500 is too much for now.

any comments about C# Java? Ruby? other?  How was this site developed? (Not that my projects are anywhere near that ambitious)

Ben, I see there are 13 reads and no comments so I guess you have most of us stumped.  Will try to steer those who would more understand what you are asking, to this blog.  I am sure Geof will read it soon.  The creater of TF is so busy creating he doesn't get on as much as the rest of us.

this site is built on LAMP (linux, apache, mySQL, and PHP).  for those back-end server side questions, ask jay.  He is your man.  But php is incredibly flexible, with lots of resources on the web, and many people are steering that direction.

thanks goeff. I like that combo--all free. I haven't done any coding in PHP but it doesn't look too different from perl at first glance.

Yeah, I have a dev guide with instructions on the basic tools you need to get going with LAMP (WAMP if you're on a windows box which I am for dev purposes) .

Shoot me an email jay@chess.com and I'll get back to you with the dev guide. Most of it won't be helpful, but it should give you a feel for what you need. I love PHP. It's very powerful and widely used. Sites like facebook and others are built with mainly php. Chess.com is also built with php. :)  And yes, free is a good option.

Thanks Jay and Valorie. I am interested in the development guide. I think I will start with WAMP.

If you were all speaking Greek I wouldn't have understood you any more than I did reading all this.
Am amazed at all of this kind of stuff but just happy if I try to write a letter to be printed and  don't lose it half way through.  I'm really good at the Church extraction program though so maybe there is hope for me.  Just wish I knew how to make a new address list for my G-mail.
