"Auto-Tune"

Submitted by Tyler on Wed, 07/22/2009 at 12:12am.

Maybe you've heard "singers" (more like rappers and other "artists"  who can't sing) use the Auto-tune effect to their voices. It makes the tone of your voice sound electric and studio-processed. Studios have been using this for years for recording artists who have trouble hitting notes in the studio. Only lately, some rappers have decided that exploiting this sound-effect makes them sound like they can really sing. Artists that are using it right now include Kanye West, The Black Eyed Peas (Boom Boom Pow), Jamie Foxx (Blame it on the...), Britney Spears, and Lil' Wayne (trust me on this one:)

Now this isn't taking a political turn, but the video below humorously uses this "Auto-tune" effect to actually make political leaders and others sing with their talking voices. I thought it was funny because it clearly illustrates how little talent it requires to be artist today, and also how ridiculous it makes these people look. Enjoy!

I didn't know that was how it worked.  Thanks for the entertainment, Tyler!

Yep, I'd heard about this already.  They were discussing it on the radio the other day too.  Probably just about everybody is using this nowadays unfortunately but here is a list of blatent abusers I'd found.

Dixie ChicksThe Long Way Around – Noticeable on “parents” and “but I.”

T-PainI’m Sprung – Especially obvious on “homies” and “lady.”

Avril LavigneComplicated – Listen to “way,” “when,” “driving,” “you’re.”

Uncle KrackerFollow Me
The whole vocal sounds strained, but especially the word “goodbye.”

Maroon 5She Will Be Loved – Listen for “rain” and “smile.”

Natasha BedingfieldLove Like This – “Apart” and “life.”

Sean KingstonBeautiful girls – “OoooOver” doesn’t sound human.

JoJoToo Little Too Late – Appropriately, “problem” stands out.

Rascal FlattsLife is a Highway
Every vocal, foreground and background, is treated, but “drive” in particular.

New Found GloryHit or Miss – “Thriller”, and every time Jordan sings “I.”

I don't really think that it necessarily means the artist cant sing, only that they are looking for this effect specifically or they are just too lazy to do retakes.  I know Jamie Foxx has a good voice as well as Kanye even though they've used Autotune to death.  I remember seeing Jamie Foxx perform live on an award show and he was pretty impressive and this was long before Al-Al-Al-Al-Al-Alcohol...

Very interesting, Tyler.  Now we need to use this with the Mormon Tabernacle Choir.

I've heard the Cylons have integrated this technology on their new cybernetic lifeforms to better infiltrate Battlestar Galactica.

Nice one Troy.  Are you speaking of the old or new series?

"By your command"  Pretty much sounds like Autotune

Ya I don't think all of them can't sing, that's what's kind of a bummer. Good artists are messing with their good voices. My first year of college I had the chance to record some stuff in a studio in Hollywood and the producer there had worked with a bunch of recording artists. He said that when he was working with "J. Lo" they used this auto tune tool "A lot". Apparently she's not a great singer according to this guy.

Well, that opens up the door for my 'beef' with Americal Idol.  American Idol, I feel, is JUST a singing contest.  The contestants are NOT artists.  Real artists don't just sing and something like Autotune just allows more people who aren't even singers hide behind technology.  Real artists should arrange, write, sing (doesn't have to be good... look at Bob Dylan, Prince and many others who aren't classically good singers) and perform.  And then Simon has the nerve to tell some of the contestants that thet sound like karaoke.

What's really annoying about the use of this tool, is that if you actually try to sing along with some of these songs, you find yourself failing miserably trying to mimmick these weird notes/tunes. Kinda kills the energy when you're tearing it up in your car all alone with the radio blasting. I refuse to believe its just the fact that I can't sing.

the first time i remember hearing this odd-tweaking sound to a singers voice was in Cher's "Do You BeLIEieIEve".  And I couldn't figure out what the crud or why the crud they were doing it.  Sounds weird.  And I am not a fan of the brutha's that all use it in their songs today.  I turn the channel when I hear it.

Well Miley Cyrus's new song is obviously a huge Auto-tune project.  And not Auto-tuned for the effect but to get her to hit all those notes.  It is starting to sound like every new hip hop song has heavy Auto-tune effects on it and I must admit is starting to run it's course.
