Anti-Television

I'm kind of anti-television, actually.  And now that Steve Irwin has died,  I only watch pro basketball, college basketball, pro football, college football, march madness, super bowl, spongebob, major league baseball, dirty jobs, survivor, sunday golf, american idol, mythbusters, select seasons of the Batchelor, dangerous jobs, sportscenter, price is right, and re-runs of Full House.

My current lineup is something like:

American Chopper

Dirty Jobs

American Idol with Robie - I wouldnt' watch it by myself

Deal or no deal - to see Anya, Lindsy, Lisa, Aubrey and Laura - otherwise that show is so setup it's annoying.  I'd like to see for once someone who isn't artificially excited.

Anything on the military channel.

I occasionally catch a few episodes of 48 hours, dateline, Forensic Files, etc.  But that other category, of Wife Swap, Nanny, that stuff is crappy.

Worst show in the world - OPRAH the whale.  Biggest reverse racist this planet has ever known.  What was her latest move?  Funding some all-black girls thing of some kind.  Only hired black people for her lame magazine.  And all you white people that love her cuz she is so giving, cmon please.  She gives away stuff that was donated to her to as a marketing method to "advertise" on her show.  She doesnt pay for anything that is given away.

Geoff, I am a serious Oprah fan.  We need to have an in-depth debate about this.  She has done more for tv in the past 15 years than anyone else I can think of.  And as for the girls' school-it was in South Africa!!!!!  Women there deserve all of the help they can get.

How can anyone who watches the Bachelor complain about Oprah?????

I can barely stomach the Bachelor, honestly, so good point.  As far as Oprah goes, she sees too much color.  Just do stuff.  Just do nice stuff.  I just think its a catch-22.  When all the legislation and media (and rightfully so) are moving towards NOT seeing color, and everyone is equal, then they turn around and talk about color and race every other minute in the media, and on talk shows and news and sports and first black to space, etc etc etc, i find it highly hypocritical.  And she is a big part of that.  I'd rather move on, and celebrate Jerome Robertson when Jerome Robertson wins the Tour De France.

I'm so tempted to get involved in this debate....but I think I'll avoid it and watch you two battle it out. All I have to say is GO O'REILLY!  His appearance on Oprah was pretty good, minus the few dorks in the audience with dumb comments.

See?  Another man, that is manly enough to admit that Full House, although pathetically cheesey with a great message at the end of each episode, is a great show.

Most TV is annoying because it's "more of the same."  The same topic, the same ads, the same "tragic reality characters."  I.e. the reality show with the mean girl or guy, the person with emotional problems, the leader, the gay/lesbian, the minority character and usually one average joe type.  Of course, everyone  is mostly beautiful/hot.  A lot of it falls into the "nothing new under the sun" category.  Sitcoms are the worst!  Talk shows aren't much better.  I just got cable after not having it for years and am unimpressed with the selection I can find in the 74 channels I have.  It's pretty terrible when the only channel airing a non-rerurn is the Home Shopping Network and the Weather Channel.  Okay, so I do have a few things I like--I love Fox News, I LOVE the "Dirty Jobs" show--makes me appreciate what I do (or don't do at the moment).  I really like Alton Brown on the Food Network because he approaches cooking as a science and explains everything from why meat gets tough when you overcook it to why you shouldn't overbeat cream (Four seconds past done and you have butter.)  Other shows of occasional interest--What not to Wear, Mystery Diagnosis and PBS's Nova and Nature shows.  Mostly though--how much of what's on TV actually makes anyone a better person?  Do something, for heaven's sake--read a book, talk to a friend, post to Geoff's blog, go help at the soup kitchen...

My pollyanna-soapbox moment is over...have a great day everyone!

I can't possibly follow all the loads and loads of new shows.  It's almost ridiculous how competitive TV is now.

Geoff -- This is a really old blog, but I want to issue you a challenge. TiVo and then WATCH, start to finish, "Building A Dream" the documentary about the all-girls academy Oprah has funded in South Africa. If after watching, you can still say that Oprah isn't using her money and influence to positively impact people, I will be happy to eat my words. I never watch daytime TV -- I'm just plain against it in principle. But I've read several books about the plight of children in South Africa due to the Aids epidemic, and Brent and I watched this show tonight. I give Oprah tons of credit for attempting to use her money to assist girls who might in the future be able to have a positive influence on what's happening in South Africa. And what is reverse racism? Oprah is black, African American, whatever you want to call it. It's only natural she would want to channel her energies and resources to help those of her same ethnicity, and born in poverty as she was. Plus, while we often screw things up here in America, we do have the means to meet the needs of our population -- we just haven't figured out the right methods to get the means to the people who need it. The people of South Africa do NOT currently have the ability to help their population, especially their children, of which thousands are currently parentless. I truly think you need to rethink your stance here. Spend an hour watching this instead of the Bachelor and let me know what you think. It is a powerful program and if it doesn't make you cry, I would be surprised. I know you're just an old softie dad at heart.

Okay, I like:  "Extreme Make Over Home Edition" and the room/home make over shows on HGTV, as well as CSI, LOST and SOMETIMES the Bachelor -my favorite season was when it first came out back in like 2003...it's kind of getting old now; I always enjoy a good re-run of theThe Cosby Show, The Brady Bunch and Full House. I'll even catch Oprah once in awhile....but OMG did anyone see it today?

She had on the "man" who is 6 months pregnant and his wife. He actually was born a woman and 'turned' male. He gave a lot more information than I wanted to hear. You might be asking, well why didn't you turn it. It was like I wanted too, but my fingers were frozen on the remote and my eyes glued to the tv...for about 10 minutes then I couldn't stand it any longer. It was way to wierd for me. Any other lookers?
